Promises
I'm trying to think of a better title for this... the best I've been able to
come up with so far is 'Lead Promises' (lead as in the metal, not as in leader).
Any ideas?

Prepare to
throw, pull the pin
Scarlet grass and charred trees
Dying comrades
grasping to my knees
Our boots licked by the pyre flame
To kill and
be killed without any shame
Singing war songs, and shouting war cries
Did you remember to say your goodbyes?
Marching in mud to our
dutiful death
Bound to the country, to our very last breath
In the name
of democracy, justice, and truth
We send forth our husbands, sons, and youth
To fight! To struggle!
To the American dream!
To live! To die!
But long gone memories of melting ice cream...
Shattered dreams of a
picnic in the park
Playing hide-and-seek and tag in the dark
Broken
promises of birthday parties and presents
And the beauty of innocence that
it represents
The comforting warmth of the hug of a friend
Those
carefree days you wish'd would never end
Now all of the optimism, hope, and
glee
All of the happiness and light and feeling free
All of the
feelings you wish'd would always stay
Now seem so very, very far away....
The bullet finds its target
