If you're thinking about Longhorn (can't bring myself to use "Vista") it's not due till another year.

If you're thinking about 64-bit edition of XP, i think it's only made for 64-bit CPU's and i dont think you're getting an Athlon 64 :P

probably for a while...macs are further ahead powerwise then PCs unfortunaly but they have nothing going for them just about on the gameing side...the biggest seller for PCs now...macs are used a lot with graphic design and the such cause of their fast compiling speeds

..................no they aren't.......they're FAR behind in the raw power department....unless something very drastic happened between now and 2 years ago.

Oh I thought you meant trying to get a computer with Longhorn already on it.

"Longhorn" had a beta our last year it wasnt publicly posted but on there unofficial site they where hosting it and some small add-ons for testing. I happen to test it out before it was "Vista" and I can say if its anything like the the old source then its gonna be great. They fixed the memory leek XP had. For example ever notice how XP hogs alot of RAM/CPU power then playing one game? sometimes making it go to 100% use? well thats fixed in the new Vista.

Also there no longer using the CMD or dos prompt anymore. There using a new command driven system.

Vista is a wopping 2.7Gbs or so :/ thats the only thing that kinda sucks. Its still packed with alot of stuff you dont need and probly will never use.

Id like to test the current beta and see whats been changed.

O well I still hate windows but I have to admit they added alot of nice things. If you want to compair it to somthing. Its more like a win2k or win3k server then any other OS they made. Expect it to be fast and ready for anyting you through at it.

Next OS:

Microsoft Wal-Mart

Now if only Cerulean Studios would make an Trillian OS that will run any file format from any OS in one OS. :p

Reports of Vista virus rebutted

Microsoft has hit back at reports of the first virus for its new version of Windows, dubbed Vista. Last week an Austrian programmer published examples of malicious code that exploits a Microsoft command shell technology currently under development.

But the software giant has said the technology targeted will not be part of the next version of Windows.

"These reports pose no risk for Microsoft customers," said the firm's Stephen Toulouse in a blog posting.

Vista, previously codenamed Longhorn, is due for release towards the end of 2006, half a decade after Windows XP.

No threat

The malicious code affects a Microsoft command shell technology called MSH.

This could replace the simple command shell used in Windows. A command shell lets users enter text-based commands, as in the predecessor to Windows, DOS.

The emergence of the proof-of-concept viruses prompted reports of the first viruses for Vista, as MSH was expected to be part of the new operating system.

But Microsoft has sought to squash talk of Vista viruses. In a posting on the company's security blog, Stephen Toulouse said the MSH technology would not be included in the final version of Vista.

Instead he said that MSH was still being tested and could be included in future versions of Windows developed in three to five years' time.

"The viruses do not attempt to exploit a software vulnerability and do not encompass a new method of attack," said the Microsoft security programme manager.

Mr Toulouse also denied that MSH was being pulled from Windows Vista due to the virus reports.

"One had nothing to do with the other," he said.

Microsoft's flagship Windows software already runs on about 90% of personal computers worldwide.

The firm has promised that security will be an integral part of Vista.

*Cought* Lindows *Cought*

They did have competition, they solved that by sueing lindows for name issues. Now there called Linspire. Supports Linux and windows based programs. Installes less then 15 mins. Best thing about it is you truly can buy it at Wal-mart  or just download it for free since it is a linux distro.

As for viruses on OS's, Thats gonna happen on anything thats big. As you can see with firefox, its been a major target latlee but since its open source many people fix the bugs as there being exploited. To bad windows wasnt like that.

major target by microsoft. :p *remembers the netscape/ie wars* lmao.. microsoft needs some more competition. remember when they came out with new versions of IE every couple of months? and then netscape finally floundered and microsoft hasn't upgraded IE 6 in over a year. *wonders when IE 7 will ever come out*
