Computer troubles... First, Norton anti-virus and Internet protection refuse to open along with any files associated with it. They all have an error come up ("Symantec Integrator has encountered a problem and will need to close"). Second, MSN messenger won't let me log in (everyone else in the house can, on their own computers of course). I've tried what it said in it's help section, but it didn't do a thing. Third, in many sites (using firefox) I can go in browse a few pages but then it won't let me go into certain pages. Example: I can get to the main google page and use the search, but I can't get to my google mail/ I can go to my bank's main page and such, but it wont let me log in (others in the house can). Fourth and finally, Internet Explorer will open, but connect to nothing.

Does this sound like a virus anyone knows about? Or is it just my computer being a pos?

P.S.

I've already run spybot and ad-aware and am currently running AGV antivirus(it's not finished yet -_-; )

I think "Symantec Integrator" screwed up your system, taking down Internet Protection with its integratedness, in turn taking down a shiatload of your internet with it. At least that's what i deduce based on what your stuff sounds like it does...

first did you just update your system with the new Microsoft patch? If so then I can tell you right now thats probly whats screwing your system up. They made a public announcement about most things not working after the update and the way to fix it is to set everything to there defaults and then installing the update. So if you did do the update id suggest uninstalling it using the control panel if it shows uninstall the new update then set everything to default (firewall, security settings) then install.

If this is not your problem then it sounds like your internet settings where changed or possibly your hosts file. Open Internet explorer, go to tools>internet options>privacy. Look at that and see if its higher then what you want. Myn is set to medium. Then go to tools>internet options>Security and look that over. Make shore theres nothing checked you dont want checked and look at the trusted and none trusted sites. There should be none if there are some and you know for a fact you did not add them then you might have had a browser hijack (adware) change all your settings. Also go to tools>internet options>Advanced and look over all settings there for anything that seems wrong. If all else fails just click "set everything to default".

I hope this helped a little.

Cfi: I think you're probably right... I was able to uninstall Norton anti-virus but not internet security.

Goku: I did d/l the update, but I can't find anything that would let me uninstall it.

A friend also mentioned that it could be Malwear... Anyone know if how I could find out?

Norton Anti-Virus is utter crap overall. Download Avast 4, it's completely free and does the job a million times better than Norton ever did for me.

i'm thinking the same thing as cfi. in regards to your internet security not uninstalling, its probably because of the errors that kept loading. re-install your entire norton package and then uninstall it. that should fix the errors and allow you to remove it from your system. i recommend avast and zone alarm.

@Aroura - Do you happen to remeber the update service number? If you do you can go to control panel>add remover programs then search for the new update and just uninstall it. Then reinstall the security software you have and it should work again.

I did a seach for some info on the new update and what its effects are with viruse scanners and such when I was in college today. It seems alot of people are having the same problems as you due to the update and its security fixes. I don't know what to say other then try and do that Sledgstone said and if that fails contact the software companys help service. If you don't wanna do that then you could delete all the files and then delete the reg address but I wouldnt recommend doing it that way. Ill ask around and see if any of my friends went through what you did and how they fixed it.

Btw. It seems Microsoft is beefing up there security apps and there conflicting with other security software. So the commen rule is true, its not wise to have more then onr viruse scanner, firewall running at the same time.

As I said, Norton sucks balls. It rarely picks up anything, and lets tons of crap in. Download Avast, and run a full system virus scan. It works wonders.

Correct you wont notice anything till you re-install the norton software. It should work as it did before you where having issues. If it dosnt then send a bug report to Microsoft with info on whats going on and they should get back to you in a day or 2 with full info or patches to fix the issues.

So re-install your norton stuff
if everything works then your all set and hold off on the winXP update for a month or two. It does fix alot of up comming security issues but there things norton security could probly pickup after a few updates.

forget reinstalling norton...just get rid of it and get Avast :-P norton never finds anything and it eats up every resource it can get a hold of

Ya Norton uses alot of memory but its still one of the best. But its a known fact that your viruse scanner is only as good as how often you update its database.

I would always update before running it.
