May 8, 2006 - In a last minute bombshell, Kaz Hirai announced the specific date and details of the PS3 launch. The PS3 will be arranged in two separate system configurations: a 20 and a 60 gigabyte hard drive system. What's more, Japan will see the PS3 first on November 11th, at a price for 59,800 yen for the 20 gigabyte system setup. The 60 gigabyte system will be open ended and set by retailers. North America, Europe and Australasia will see the system six days later on November 17th. The price? $499 dollars or 499 Euros for the 20 gig version, and $599 dollars or 599 Euros for the 60 gig version.

Hirai also announced that Sony will try to get a grand total of six million units shipped by March 31, 2007, which is Sony's fiscal date: 2 million PS3s will be available during the initial launch window, another 2 million will be shipped before the end of 2006, and finally another 2 before March 31st.

We'll have more details shortly.

Yeah its really expensive. But considering a normal Blu-ray player runs at that price, you are getting alot more than just a blu-ray player.

Im just glad its not $700. I doubt I will get the 60 gig drive, thats probably more space than I'll ever use, especially since I overrite alot of my saves.

Did they say it will be that much? I'd be surprised if Wii is that much. Considering they put so much money into their precious controller. Id say $299.99 :p

No less than $149.99, I guess we will find out tomorrow at their press conference.

I found a gamespot article.. it looks like theres more to the price difference than just the hard drive size:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6149552.html

The PlayStation 3 will come in two configurations, one will have a 20GB hard drive and the other will have a 60GB hard drive. However, losing 40GB isn't the only downgrade with the 20GB version. The 20GB version, priced at $499, will not have Memory Stick, SD, or Compact Flash inputs, Wi-Fi capabilities, or any HDMI output.

The new motion-sensitive controller, included standard in both the 20GB and 60GB models, will lack a feature that was present in the PlayStation 2's DualShock 2 controller--vibration. Citing the new "six-degree," a statement from Sony says "vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor."

No way in hell am I droping 500$ on a console. I can buy a brand new, rather large, Warhammer army for that price.

yeah poor DX is gonna have to plunk down 599 if he wants a none "core" system X'D...sorry using the excuse for "blu-ray player" is a bad excuse to jsutify the outrageous price...yes i knwo its some hardcore shit but that was their choice to choose "twinking" over putting out a system that anyone can enjoy without having to take out a loan
