One of my favorite ep's to watch for Sesshy being a total softie to Rin is "Jaken Falls Ill."

I see it like this; Sesshomaru hated humans. Part of his growth as a character was to come to like/accept/love a human being. A guy that hates humans isn't going to run out and get a human girlfriend. The bond of love between a man and woman is nothing compared to the love of a parent for their child. It is a paternal love Sesshomaru has for Rin; unconditional and constant.

Perhaps. He seems to defend Rin from Jaken's criticism more like a father or big brother than anything else.
