"To gain, something of equal value must be lost. This is the first law of equivalent exchange. In the beginning we really believed this to be life's one, and only, truth." -Alphonse Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist

The Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, lost their mother at a young age. And because they couldn't handle her death, they looked to alchemy for an solution. A well trained alchemist could draw a transmutation circle, activate it, and accomplish almost any goal. Whether it was repairing a broken clock, turning a wall into a door, just about anything could be done as long as it followed equivalent exchange.

Base elements were needed to forge new items, steel would make something steel, wood for something wood. But what was truly needed for a human life? Ed & Al found out when they tried to use alchemy to revive their mother from the grave. They failed. Ed lost his leg and Al lost his body. Then at the cost of his own arm, Ed was able to save his brother's soul by attaching it to a suit of armor.

Ed, with a prosthetic arm and leg called automail, and Al, a living suit of armor, are on a quest to find the philosopher's stone. An item that negates equivalent exchange. With it, they plan to regain their bodies. Searching for the philosopher's stone is long and tedious and information is scarse. So Ed joins the military to gain access to restricted files and to get leads to help in their search.

Throughout their adventures, Ed and Al uncover the dark secrets of the philosopher's stone. But will they make one? Or has someone else? And what about the homonuculus they have encountered? What purpose do they serve?

Fullmetal Alchemist is, without a doubt, one of my favorite animes. The characters are wonderful as their individual personalities really draw you to them. And the base storyline and ever evolving plot is simply fantastic. Everything comes together in the end and "The Truth" that Ed discovers is completely unexpected.
